Casa Lucila is located on the far end of Mazatlan’s 13-mile malecon (seaside boardwalk), perched on a promontory offering spectacular view of the entire bay. The eight-room venue, which opened in 2007, was the first boutique hotel in a destination known for its all-inclusive resorts.

This luxurious little oasis is named for owner Conchita Valdes de Boccard’s mother, Lucila Valades Valdez, and each room is named for one of Lucila’s daughters. Valdes de Boccard and her husband Chris Boccard have combined traditional Mexican colonial architecture with modern Italian furniture and fixtures to create a space that is both comfortable and chic.  The impeccably restored building was originally a mansion for wealthy German settlers, then a nightclub that drew the likes of Ernest Hemingway and John Wayne. Its modern incarnation is much quieter: an adults-only policy and a relatively secluded location make Casa Lucila an idyllic getaway for those looking for a few days of uninterrupted quiet.

The view from Casa Lucila’s terrace is breathtaking, and the hotel is an easy walk to the restaurants and galleries of Mazatlan’s historical center. The ground floor restaurant, The Water’s Edge Seaside Bistro, offers fresh international cuisine from 7:30 AM to 10 PM, for those who don’t want to leave the Casa Lucila oasis. Rooms are ample and tasteful, with enormous bathrooms and closets. Several of the rooms have a Jacuzzi tub. Linens and amenities are top quality, and the entire staff speaks excellent English. Wireless internet is complementary. For the quality of the rooms and service the hotel is surprisingly affordable, with low season prices starting at $95 USD per night.

Given its size, Casa Lucila is a venue that works best for small groups. The hotel can accommodate groups from 12 to 80 people. Small executive groups can be set up comfortably in the lower courtyard, and the roof terrace is the perfect setting for cocktails or dinners. The hotel hosts many weddings, and Conchita, the largest and most luxurious room in the hotel, is the perfect honeymoon suite
