Mexico’s Executive Director of Meetings Wins Prestigious JMIC Award

This year´s Joint Meetings Industry Council’s (JMIC) distinguished Profile and Power Award was given to Eduardo Chaillo, from the Mexico Tourism Board. The nomination was granted for Mr. Chaillo’s instigation of an industry study aimed at calculating the economic impact of Mexico’s meetings industry.

The Profile and Power Award is granted to individuals recognized by JMIC for “advancing the awareness and influence of the meetings industry in their respective communities”, and has been presented annually at prominent industry events since 2005. This year’s nominee, Eduardo Chaillo, has been the executive director of meetings for the Mexico Tourism Board for over six years and was instrumental in building support for the study.

Price Waterhouse Coopers carried out the study with the support of the Center for Higher Studies in Tourism (CESTUR). The results, released in late October, evaluated Mexico’s meetings industry at US$18.1 billion dollars, making it the 14th largest contributor to the nation’s GDP. Perhaps more importantly, however, the study has benchmarked the industry’s economic significance, and made its importance more tangible to policy makers.
