Mexico to Host First Ever WTTC Regional Summit

Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism (SECTUR) will host the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) inaugural regional summit in the Riviera Maya from the 16th to the 18th of May 2012. Gran Velas Hotel and Resort is the venue.

Scheduled to be held just after the T20 Ministers Meeting in Merida, Mexico, the WTTC Americas Summit will include North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

According to David Scowsill, President and CEO of the WTTC, “Mexico is the ideal host for our first Regional Summit, which takes place one month before the G20 meeting. Mexico leads the way in recognizing the enormous contribution travel and tourism makes to the economy, employment, and export income.”

The WTTC Americas Summit will cover hot topics on the tourism industry in the Americas and the Caribbean, inviting delegates representing member countries from public and private tourism sectors.

“We are honored that Mexico was selected to host the first WTTC Regional Summit and look forward to creating synergies and opportunities through the interaction and discussions among the leaders that will attend the most important forum of an industry that not only significantly contributes to the global GDP but also provides the best opportunity to create jobs and growth,” stated Gloria Guevara Manzo, Mexico’s Secretary of Tourism.

The WTTC announced its plans to launch a series of regional summits in August 2011. These regional summits will focus on tourism-related issues in the summit’s region as well as trends in global tourism, designed to deliver the objectives outlined in the WTTC’s mission.
